First Australian Film Festival in Kuwait
On Wednesday and Thursday of last week I committed myself to watching all 5 movies of the First Australian Film Festival that was held at the Shaab Park’s Movie Theater. Thank you to the great efforts of the Australian Embassy (Dr. King and his staff) as well as the sponsors for bringing such movies into Kuwait! This has been the second film festival this year and I was greatly impressed by the timeliness of the event and the organization. Here is my take on the movies that were shown!
Strictly Ballroom
When the movie started I didn’t know what it was all about except for the fact it pertained to ballroom dancing! About half an hour into the movie I realized that I actually watched the movie a while back! The movie was about this dancer who wants to enter a ballroom dancing competition using his own steps but everyone thinks his steps are too strange for the sport. The movie showed how a person’s determination can raise above everyone’s expectations and make a difference!
The Tracker
A story about Aboriginal law with a twist of revenge! Two police officers were tracking down an Aborigine with the help of an Aboriginal Tracker. The story shows how one of the officers has a superiority complex whilst the other has a clean head on his shoulders. The film takes you through the journey of those men from the time they started till the time they found the person they were tracking!
The Man from Snowy River
This was my favorite movie! This was a bout how a guy who everyone considered a boy and what he had to do in order for people to call him a man! The mixture of suspense, action, love, and amazing group of actors made this movie so thrilling. I wouldn’t mind seeing this movie again!
Rabbit-Proof Fence
This was a sad story about oppression and injustice in the early 1900s about how children who were half casts were taken away from their families in order to mold the Australian population into what the White people wanted it to be! A story about how a young girl leads the way home after running a way from a camp that could be considered somewhat like a concentration camp for kids! The young lady was skillful, smart, and cunning to the point she managed to get away from the police and the tracker that was hunting her and her sister down in order to take them back to that camp! Based on a true story, I really enjoyed this one a lot!
Ned Kelly
A blockbuster film based on the life of an old Australian character. There were many series, and films that were made of Ned Kelly and his “gang” but this was one of the most popular ones. This movie shows you what Ned Kelly did to get back at the corrupt police and what resulted from his actions! Great movie!

I am impressed. Didn’t know Kuwait was rapidly emerging as the movies mecca in the Mideast.

Jumping Translocation : Welcome to my blog! As for being the movie mecca, Kuwait had been pretty active with its movies but we have serious issues concerning censorship here!

4 bloggers (including myself)
I loved strictly ballroom. One thing that bothered me, is that the place was humid, not much air conditioned.

Flamingoliya : I would say that if the doors leading to the outside were closed then the AC would have cooled things down but since the doors were left open all the cool air went right outside and the humidity came in!
