NBK Walkathon

On Saturday I participated in the NBK Walkathon. Some of you might know what that is but for those who don’t it was a competition sponsored by NBK in which men had to walk 8KM , and the women walked 6KM! Since I had nothing to do and was asked to participate I did. I put my camel pack on, had my iPod going, and walked. The event was fun but unfortunately it wasn’t very organized and there was ALOT of cheating. The even was supposed to be a walk or a speed walking competition, but people were cheating by running from one point to another and they stopped just before they passed the men who were in charge of ensuring that there were no runners. There were also people who ran along the sea shore so the judges didn’t see them and finally those who came out of no where wearing numbers. I walked the 8KM in less than an hour, which is good for me! I had to wait till 6:30 or was it 7PM to find out if I was in the top ten in my category since the event personnel didn’t say anything when I passed the finish line. What I did see was that the people in Kuwait were deprived of having fun and that definitely showed during the ceremony after the walk. Everyone (boys, girls, men and women) we having fun, dancing, and enjoying themselves and not caring about the segregation laws! I could easily tell that the people needed more concerts and more things to do that encompassed loud music, lights, and dancing; or in other words a CLUB or NIGHT LIFE! Overall, I had fun but honestly I wouldn’t do it again.

  • and you placed…?

  • Purg : I don’t know! They only announced the top 10 in every category! I want to know!

  • Frankom : I understand what you are saying but if that’s the case I wonder if they counted all the sprinters/runners from the start! I can go on and on about things I saw and all but I doubt if they had all those refs. The festivities were fun I have to admit!

  • :: Yeah i got your point 200 against 12000+ ! hope they can do something regarding it for the next year.

  • Frankom : That’s up to them! As for me I might go out on the boat next time!

  • S,

I have to agree with you on things needing to be better organized, you cant have a rating system if you cant accurately judge peoples performances. No matter how many judges there were, BEFORE the event start planning the workings of how they want the race to be ran. How are marathons ran other places without widespread cheating? Perimeters need to be set up next time, rope off or barricade the selected area that way participants stay on course, have a check in point maybe every so often. I am sure there are more ways, even better ones then what I have listed but the whole point is to try to make the race fair to all next year.

  • Loca : No matter what they do the people here will always find a way to cheat!
